The ESC program provides Ocean Air with credentialed teachers who specialize in science, technology, art, music, and physical education. ESC teachers work together with classroom teachers to enhance the core curriculum; thereby supporting our mission to educate the “whole” child by providing students with opportunities for hands-on activities, problem-solving, teamwork, and exposure to the fine arts beyond what is possible in the general education classroom. In addition, our ESC teachers provide a multitude of opportunities that go beyond the core curriculum standards through lunch clubs as well as after school activities.
The opportunities our ESC teachers provide, both in the class and during free time, help our students develop skills that will be essential as they move on to become successful adults. Our commitment to providing the highest quality education is what makes the elementary schools in the Del Mar Union School District among the best in the state.
All students at Ocean Air participate in the Extended Studies Curriculum, with students in Kindergarten receiving 1 hour/week, 1st-3rd grades receiving 2 hours/week, and 4th-6th grades receiving 3 hours/week of ESC instruction. Not only does this time provide valuable enrichment and extension opportunities, it also provides classroom teachers an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialog about student needs, analysis of student work, and planning of future lessons and units of study.
